PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – With The Visit, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan tried to visit the number-one spot at the box office, but came up just a bit short.
His comedic found-footage horror thriller about a seemingly innocent visit of two teenagers to their grandparents’ house earned an estimated $26-million on its debut weekend, which gave it a close second-place finish.
But first place belonged to the new suspense thriller, The Perfect Guy, which took in $27-million.
Rounding out the top five were three holdovers — War Room with $7-million, A Walk in the Woods at $5-million, and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation with $4-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were a modest improvement over those of last weekend as well as those of a year ago.
